Dragonfly Wild Whale Watch!
The Dragonflies all enjoyed learning about the wonderful world of whales! As part of our literature unit the children each selected a whale they "wondered about" to conduct research. Using books, magazines, and their ipads, the students researched and gathered all sorts of interesting facts. In addition, the children created their own wale models - to scale! This enabled them to see how intimidating a blue whale might appear in the deep ocean to a beluga whale. On each whale the children cut out a picture of themselves (printed to scale), so that they could compare their size to a whale too! Check out their fun poses in our photo gallery! Whale books were then created using Book Creator and recorded for your listening pleasure! Each book is a little different, as it depended on the Author (your child). Books will be made accessible through your child's google drive folder. A link will be sent out at the end of the year. Be sure to open it with your ipads or iphone. This will allow you to keep and share your child's story in your iBook library! You will simply be amazed by the creativity of the Dragonflies.

Ikebana
The children were treated to a wonderful lesson on the art of ikebana. In Japanese, the kanji symbols for ikebana literally translate to "living flowers." We know it as the Japanese art of flower arrangement. After a demonstration from Omizo Sensei, the children were given the opportunity to create their group ikebana. These beautiful works of art were delivered by the children to people throughout the campus, to show our appreciate for all that they do in our Punahou community.

Image Making:
For our final Writer's Workshop piece, the children will be publishing a hard cover book to demonstrate their learning as writers! Like all of our pieces, the process began with brainstorming, touch and tell, and rough draft. Along the way, students had individual peer and teacher conferences. The "special" component of this book is the illustration. It will be based on the work of Eric Carle - paper piecing. It all began with a day spent "making paper" using a variety of techniques with watercolor paints at 7 different stations. Like scientists, they observed the effects of watercolor and salt, and were amazed by the "texture" created from a single sheet of saran wrap. Painting on wet paper created soft, subtle effects, while painting on dry paper gave much bolder colors and lines. Students will use and share their papers to illustrate their books. These precious books will be shared by your children at our Market Day Open House!

Google Expedition:
We traveled beneath the sea to visit whales in their natural habitat! All thanks to Google Expedition. Made with an android, a rubber band, special lenses in a cardboard box - the children went on an ocean expedition. This is Google's newest creation! Children "oohed, aahhhed" and squealed with delight as they swam alongside their ocean friends. Many "reached out" to touch the whales and creatures. Watching from the outside...it was lots of fun to see the students "get lost" in their expedition and forget that they were in a classroom! :) If you're curious...be sure to check them out online. You will simply be amazed!

Market Day:
The children are so excited and eager about our upcoming Market Day! The prototype phase allowed children to think about and tweak their products based on the feedback by their fellow classmates in A1 and A2. We also had a lesson focuses on product, packaging, and cost. I hope that all of you have enjoyed "collecting" payment for your services from your children in support of their business venture! Each day, time is given in class for production time. During this time business can work on anything to prepare for Market Day: signs, posters, products, price tags, etc., Please encourage your children to keep some of his/her supplies in school for this purpose. Children have eager enjoyed shopping at the teacher warehouse, where they are required to calculate cost and change for me.
Businesses do have the option to sell only 1 food/drink product. This is to encourage the students to come up with products which they themselves "produce." As we know that food products may require more of our participation than theirs. For example, a group can sell bird feeder, earrings, and spam musubis. However, they may not sell "only" cookies, lemonade, and spam musubis. I also encouraged the students to look into the possiblities of services they might offer. The culminating celebration of Market Day will be an auction where the children will use their profits to bid on an array of items. If you are able/willing to donate small items to our auction, they would be greatly appreciated. Market Day is open to parents and grandparents too. From school we have invited the specials teachers (who have worked with the children this year), supervisors, and administration. The adults love shopping just as much as, or even more than the children! We hope you have all marked our calendars!
