Magic Penny Drive
Thank you parents for helping your child support the magic penny drive! It tied in perfectly with our money and math unit gearing up for carnival! The children bagged the collected pennies daily. The following week they worked in groups to estimate, count, and total up the value of the pennies collected each day. Here is what they got: Monday - $1.26, Tuesday - $1.30, Wednesday - $3.31, Thursday - $9.49, and Friday - $17.89. As you may have guessed, we did collect an assortment of coins...which wonderfully led into an extended math lesson!! Converting all the coins into pennies....and adding them up (instead of counting)! They proudly handed the jar to the advancement office that week!

World Read Aloud:
In honor of World Read Aloud the Dragonflies had the opportunity to Skype with Josh Funk - the author of Lady Pancake and Sir Frenchtoast. A software engineer by day, Mr. Funk spends his evenings "writing stories in bed." He shared that his ideas come from his real life experiences! The inspiration behind this book? His own children fighting about pancakes and french toast one morning! Sharing the experience with us, were the Kindergarteners from Mrs. Winter's class. Together, the students asked questions, and were given the opportunity to listen to Mr. Funk read a "VERY special" story! We could not have asked for a more wonderful way to spend the afternoon!

Writer's Workshop:
We finally finished our Small Moment unit! The children wrote amazing stories based on a special small moment in their lives! The requirements were to incorporate dialogue and of course, create complex sentences with detail! Published books will be shared at our parent teacher conference, and can later be accessed and downloaded into your ibooks account! This week we also started on our last and final Writer's Workshop piece. We started with looking at favorite picture books and looking closely at character, setting, problem, plot, and resolution. Students then mapped out their fictional stories and began their rough drafts. They are extremely excited, as the production of this book will be a result of Image Making - a paper making session in which their work closely resembles that of author Eric Carle.
This gift will be presented to you at our End of Year Market Day celebration and luncheon.

Economics:
We have covered several economics concepts including: wants, needs, goods, service, producers, consumers, capital resources, human resources, capital resources, and scarcity. In order for the children to start their classroom economy, they learned about the story of how money came to be. From there, students submitted designs for our classroom currency, and voted on their favorite ones. Beginning next week, students will be earning money on a daily basis for doing their job as "students." As a class they shared, discussed, and determined 3 criteria for which they would be paid: completing classwork/homework, being mindful/respectful, and being organized. Be on the lookout next week for a letter with specific details on our upcoming Market Day.

Math:
In math we have learned how to regroup in addition and moved into borrowing in subtraction. We will continue to practice this with 2 digit numbers over the course of next few weeks. Thank you to those of you who have allowed your children some time to practice on Xtramath or Dreambox at home. While this is not essential to learn math, it does give the children confidence to have automaticity, and also allows them to focus less on computation and more on the problem at hand. Students have also demonstrated their understanding of math by creating their own problem stories in math. :)

Literature and Whales:
In literature we have embarked on a journey with Ms. Frizzle on the Magic School Bus. Students have been learning much about whales, and will be selecting their own whales to do an inquiry project on. They also just finished learning about Non-fiction features, and identified how and why authors use specific features. This understanding of features, will help them as they conduct their research.

May Day:
Just a friendly reminder...the children have been asked to wear blue aloha wear for May Day. They have already started on their beautiful hala leis. Yes! The students have had to cut, fold, tape, and string, their own hala with leaves, lei. You will all simply be amazed! Combined with the beautiful chant taught by Uncle Allen (Nalu's dad), our program is sure to be an event you don't want to miss!
