Happy Birthday Punahou!
In honor of the school's 175th birthday, students in the junior school were partnered up with Academy students! The Dragonflies (Class of 2026) were paired up with Mr. Tollefson's Freshman (Class of 2019), to create a birthday card. Each student wrote a wish for the future of Punahou. To help them think about a meaningful future wish, the Dragonflies brainstormed....."What did they love about Punahou? What makes Punahou special for them? What would they like their children to have/experience if they were to attend Punahou?" You would have been proud of the Dragonfly's wishes!

Carnival:
Can you see the Buff n Blue tents popping up around campus? How about the feeling of excitement buzzing in the air? It could only mean one thing....CARNIVAL! . In true Punahou tradition, the class of 2017 promises that "Carnival: Rewind The Time," will be the best one ever!
Just couple of notes regarding carnival:
- Students will need to bring a homelunch with drink on Thursday, February 4. To prepare for carnival, the cafeteria will not be serving food. However for the older students, the snack bar will be open.
- Scrip can be purchased from me on Friday morning. Cash only please. Maximum purchase is $10 in scrip. This is completely optional.
.-Dismissal: The children will be dismissed at 10:50. I kindly ask for your support in waiting for your child in front of the class and not on the back lanai.

Economics:
I hope you've had a chance to talk a little about economics with your children. So far through "concept-atttainment" they've helped to identify what a community is. We will be learning about and looking at the different types of communities and how each one supports itself and the greater community. This will lead into the study of various economic terms including but not limited to: needs, wants, producers, consumers, interdependence, money, and scarcity. Our culminating event will be Market Day in which the children will have established their own businesses either as a corporation or a sole proprietor.

Gyotaku:
The children had a wonderful morning of Gyotaku! Thanks to "Pops" Kawakami (Vincent's Grandfather and Vincent) and Greg Sakamoto (Shayna's dad) the children had a buffet of sea creatures to choose from! We also had a wonderful team of gyotaku artists (Miki Saito, "Pops" Kawakami,Brooke Sakamoto, Corey Matsuoka, Kane Osorio, Keri Paguio, and Danielle Sun, ) who helped the children make their beautiful prints on both shirt and rice paper. Each print was unique and beautiful! One of the lessons Naoki taught the children was to "eat what you catch." I am happy to share that the catch of the day filled the tummies of our support staff here at school! The children were so delighted to hear that we "listened" to Naoki, and that we did "not waste." :) :)

Writers Workshop:
We started on our new Writer's Workshop piece centered on a "small moment" where the children learned how to zoom in to a specific event in their life. Students mapped their ideas using their five sense to help them use descriptive "juicy" words. Another component in this piece was to use dialog - learning how/when to use quotation marks, as well as incorporating skills learned from past lessons on sentence structure, and having a beginning-middle-end. These pieces will go through the entire process, ending in a final product in digital form. The children will word process their work using Book Creator, and create their illustrations in Drawing Pad.

Japanese Toys and Games
Tying into our upcoming unit on Japan, the children were treated to a traditional Japanese game "Fukuwarai" by Omizo sensei. The idea that one rings in the New Year with laughter, became a game where children had to build faces - blindfolded! There was certainly lots of laughter in A-2. In addition, Aunty Miki shared a classic childhood game using the seeds from the wili wili tree ...the Mame Game. This tied in perfectly with our recent visit to the JCCH where the Dragonflies learned about how children in the olden days made their own toys and games! I am hoping the children use this to help guide their thinking as we move into our Economics unit.
